I didn't interpet the NYT article as you did. The author is just saying that we cannot put kids on a scale and tell them to lose weight, without knowing the reason why they are obese. Are they experiencing a mental disorder? An abuse? Can we start from listening, from education, from caring to get to the objective, make them losing weight? We have to first understand the cause of obesity and then cure it. And the cause if often linked to social context, economics problems, mental problems...Put them on a scale, measuring the BMI and give them strict diets are not working, so maybe we should start thinking new strategies. Narrative medicine would help. And this is valuable for adults obesity as well.
