I wish you all would discuss evidence or lack of regarding saturated fat and heart disease. I found on MDPI a 2021 article titled Dietary Saturated Fats and Health: Are US Guidelines Evidenced Based?
As a boy I did a lot of fishing in the nearby mill pond and regularly came home with my catch. I cleaned them & grandma cooked em. But beware of swallowing the bones as they are deadly!
Not necessarily a medical issue but certainly a public health one…I recall a friend’s father suggesting that we shouldn’t wear seat belts because we could find ourselves in the car upside-down in a river (or other body of water) and unable to escape due to those dastardly straps.
We weren't allowed tomato sauce... Apparently his Dr had told my father it rotted your stomach...
And the Indigenous community I grew up in... I remember an elder on why you shouldn't send kids to school... Keep them inside, (small rooms) their minds grow small; let them run around outside all day, their minds grow big... I have sympathy for this one!
She was probably right according to my Yuka app my favorite “best foods’ mayonnaise contains calcium disodium edta, a “moderate risk’ additive which causes all kinds of problems….according to Grok: Calcium Disodium EDTA (also known as Calcium Sodium EDTA) is used medically, particularly in chelation therapy to treat lead poisoning by removing heavy metals from the body. Here are some potential side effects associated with its use:
### Common Side Effects:
- **Nausea**
- **Vomiting**
- **Diarrhea**
- **Headache**
- **Fatigue**
- **Fever**
- **Chills**
- **Muscle cramps**
### Less Common or Serious Side Effects:
- **Kidney damage** - particularly if administered at high doses or in patients with pre-existing kidney issues.
- **Electrolyte imbalances** - such as low calcium or magnesium levels in the blood, which can lead to symptoms like weakness, muscle spasms, or arrhythmias.
- **Hypotension** (low blood pressure)
- **Tetany** (involuntary muscle contractions) due to hypocalcemia
- **Seizures** - in severe cases or with incorrect administration.
### Long-term Use or Overdose:
- Prolonged use or excessive dosage might lead to more severe manifestations of the issues listed above, particularly related to kidney function and mineral imbalances.
### Precautions:
- **Monitoring**: Patients typically require close monitoring of kidney function and blood levels of minerals during treatment.
- **Dose Adjustment**: The dose must be carefully adjusted based on the patient's condition, levels of heavy metals, and kidney function.
It's crucial for this treatment to be conducted under medical supervision since EDTA chelation can have significant effects on the body's systems. If you or someone you know is considering chelation therapy, consult with a healthcare provider to understand the risks versus benefits for your specific health situation. Remember, while EDTA can be life-saving in cases of heavy metal poisoning, its use must be justified by medical necessity and managed carefully.
I love these! When I was a kid one of our golden rules was no swimming after eating or - you guessed it - we’d get a cramp and die. My grandfather embellished with a story that he almost died from such a cramp, though he was “lucky” that the lifeguard resurrected him by pushing on his belly till fish flew out of his mouth. (!). I’m not sure when I stopped believing the story…
How about these "myths" - if anyone has evidence that these aren't myths - would love to see it.
You lose most of your body heat through your head
You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day
If you go out in the cold with wet hair you will get a cold
Carrots can improve your eyesight
Eating spinach can make you stronger
You should finish the course of an antibiotic - other than for things like endocarditis and prostatitis you can stop antibiotics once asymptomatic for 48-72 hours
This one is very popular in my country…especially from grandmothers….never sleep with your hair wet or else you will go blind in the morning! 😆 That took years for me to NOT to do.🤣
I still find it difficult to see through the rear view mirror when the inside light is on in the car. I've come to realize this matters little in the US where drivers don't bother to use their mirrors.
THANKS A LOT! 🥵. Step on a crack, break your momma’s back…now that song WHIP IT has earwormed its way into my danged brain for the day. Otherwise this was a fun read!
Here’s one I heard from my mother (who was from Spain): exposing yourself to air conditioning (to cool a room/house) will make you sick, ESPECIALLY if you slept in a room with air conditioning. “Sick” meant getting the common cold.
Delightful! My sisters said if I crossed my eyes in wind, they would stay that way. I would go outside on windy days and cross them quickly, impressed by my own courage LOL. And I considered it a small miracle growing up in the late 70s and early 80s that I never fell prey to a pool of quicksand.

Lotta kids did the solo activity only til they needed glasses
Sitting on a radiator will give you piles
Blowing air from a bicycle pump on your hand will give you warts
And I won’t get into the causes of the infernal trio
Athletes foot, Jock Rot, and Scrum Pox

Oh, and I thought it was a certain solo activity that made one go blind :-).

Oh yes, a “drafty room” can be deadly.
I hesitate to correct you, but it’s “Big Mayonnaise”; “big mayonnaise” what you put on your BLT and is what kept you from Olympic glory.
😂

I was TERRIFIED of quicksand!
Me too!!!!
Seemed like quicksand was everywhere!
