All of this is so infuriating. As a younger woman, about 20 years ago, I had mammograms at which I was only told that I have "really dense breasts" and that they could not get a good image, so they took a few extra, and then they did not really understand what the image showed, so they called me back a week later for a few more. Actually -- a lot more. I had no idea, and never was told, that these extra, multiple exposures increased my risk of breast cancer. You might think, "well, of COURSE you should have known this!" but no -- I definitely did not.

After the second round of multiple exposures, I was sent to a breast surgeon for an opinion. Her opinion was "watch and wait '-- there is nothing obvious going on here....." and you might find me very foolishly avoidant, but that was when I started to get a clue and did some research and was horrified that I had never been informed of the risks, and I have never been back since for a screening.

Truly "informed" consent is so respectful and important. I had to inform myself. In the effort of doing so, I learned more horrifying things about the practice of medicine, and I decided to explore alternative health (herbal medicine).

In the ensuing years I have been disgustingly healthy with no issues. I have seen multiple friends of mine get diagnosed with "stage 1" or even lower than that, and have their breasts removed and now they are "cancer survivors." I recoil in horror at this mutilation.

Call me crazy, but I'd honestly rather just live a good life without this fear, and if one day cancer gets me on the early side because of the mammogram radiation exposure -- then so be it. I will do my best to live a healthy lifestyle in the meantime and enjoy each day, and forget these fishing expeditions. I would never want to be a cancer patient, anyway.

Doctor/ARNP/PA:

Good morning Sandra. I understand our appointment today was scheduled so we can discuss starting your yearly mammogram screening - at your age, breast cancer screening with mammograms is recommended.

Sandra: Yes, and I have been reading up on this - I have a question right up front.

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Great - let's get started.

Sandra: One thing I saw says that the radiation from the mammogram can cause cancer - is that true?

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Well... That's sort of complicated. Let me try to explain...

It is known that the x-rays used for mammograms can cause cancers, but it is not known how likely it is to cause cancer in any one person because the amount of x-rays needed to cause cancer is not known for any given person. We know that the more radiation - that's the x-rays - a person gets, the more chance there is of getting cancer. Fortunately, your mammogram uses very small amounts of radiation, so the chances of getting cancer from the mammogram is very low.

Sandra: How low?

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Well... Something like 80 people out of one hundred thousand might get cancer

Sandra: You mean that I really could GET breast cancer from the mammogram?

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Well... Theoretically you could, but as I said, the chances are very low.

Sandra: Yes, you say 'very low'... But basically you say 'we don't know'... How can that be? How is it that women have been getting these mammograms for all these years when you don't know if it's going to give them cancer...?!? This sounds crazy to me...

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Sure - I get that.

Sandra: So why don't you know ..?

Doctor/ARNP/PA: Well... It's rather complicated...

Sandra: Ok, let's just stop. I'm not doing this!

Doctor/ARNP/PA: But let's talk about the good part - the mammogram could find a cancer early and this could save your life.

Sandra: Right - I get that. But, let me guess - you can't tell me for sure - you can only tell me about 'chances' and that your best guess is that its a better chance that the mammogram will help me not hurt me. I don't like this. I'm not comfortable with this. I'll think this over and get back to you. This all sounds too crazy... You give people all these mammograms and you don't even know if it hurts more than helps. So much for 'follow the science' You people - ugh!
