“The good physician knows his patients through and through, and his knowledge is bought dearly. Time, sympathy and understanding must be lavishly dispensed, but the reward is to be found in that personal bond which forms the greatest satisfaction of the practice of medicine. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” Exactly!

Adam, these words indicate that this is a man you both love and respect. This is a remarkable, sensitive tribute that was moving and entertaining to read. Yes he taught you a great deal but as an avid reader of your “Symptoms and Diagnoses,” it is clear that medicine is a field for which you also have prodigious talent. Thanks for sharing this tribute. I hope people say things half as nice about me when I retire.

What a wonderful tribute. You were very fortunate to have a role model like that. But it does make me weep a little for what we have lost in the practice of medicine.

Godspeed Dr. S! There are docs who will emulate him thankfully, and carry the care legacy through the mouse click medicine generation. All is not lost when you have docs like him lighting the way.

Unfortunately, this type of patient care has become, for the most part, a thing of the past.

Thanks for a lovely reminder of why I love medicine so much and that working with the next generation of physicians is so important and rewarding. This philosophy and belief is needed more than ever in American medicine and I hope everyone shares this article as it is impactful.

That was a lovely tribute. In the darkest hours of physician practice I often wonder how someone might make meaning of my career as a physician when it’s over. Anything nearing Dr Sieglers would be a roaring success.
